My wife and I went to the grocery store last weekend on our usual shopping day. Usually I’m not going through any deep philosophical thoughts in the store. We go through our list, grab our food and go home. For some odd reason I started looking at the signs and noticed several fruits that were seedless. Now there’s nothing odd about seeing seedless produce but what did strike me was the fact that I didn’t see a counterpart with seeds.

Certainly seeing seedless grapes and watermelon is commonplace, but the issue is that it’s common. What’s even worst is the difficulty in finding watermelon and grapes with seeds. Just to be real, marijuana without seeds are GMO. I’m not going deep into the GMO’s because that’s worthy of several posts.

However it is worth mentioning that GMO’s, terminator seeds, Monsanto, and etc. have totally changed the food game. Let’s get one thing understood. That GMO fruit or vegetable is a better alternative than your potato chip or honey bun any day of the week. Those are facts.

I was reading an article that suggested that the average fruit and vegetable today only has 35% of the nutritional content of the produce fifty years ago. Much of this is due to the genetic splicing taking place that’s helping to add to these Frankenfoods.

In the GMO world there is a term called “terminator technology”. The goal of this technology is to modify plants to produce sterile seeds known as “suicide seeds”. This causes second generation seeds to always be sterile. Therefore, small farmers can never re-use seeds because now the seeds have no life. They are forced to constantly use the GMO seed every season instead of using natural seed that reproduces itself. Lets view this from some different angles.

In my opinion the food lacks nutritional content because its indeed the product of suicide seeds. Looking at the Book of Numbers Chapter 1, it was established that the nationality, identity, and race of a person was determined by the father. Therefore, you are the seed of your father. Well how can the food be full of life when its father produces seeds of death. A suicide seed is not going to produce life. There is no way you can have life when its the product of death itself.

Lets say a couple is having a difficult time having a baby. It’s determined that the father has sterile seeds (sperm). That is a horrible thing. His seed has no life or value. It’s through the seed that life is given. Its through the seed that the quality of something is given. The seed is the life force. The type of seed planted is the determining factor of the harvest that we reap. If terminator and suicide seeds are being planted then expect a lifeless product that lacks content.

Here is another example of Frankenfoods. Look at the difference of size between these chickens. There is a dramatic increase of size in these birds. Also, these bird are getting much larger quicker. These birds are being pumped with hormones to expedite their growth to keep up with the demands of mass production. They are conveyor belt animals for the most part. Bring them in, blow them up, slaughter them, and get them out of the door.

I saw a video a few months ago of a family that bought a chicken from Sam’s Club. This chicken was ripped! It looked like it had been in prison for 10 years doing pushups and bench press. Now we know that’s not normal. Your chicken should not look like The Hulk.

Beyond Burger Shortage and Amy’s California Veggie Burger

For the past six weeks or so it’s been nearly impossible to find Beyond Burgers. My wife and I are literally going on Beyond Burger treasure hunts on the weekend with one pack of burgers to show for our efforts. We are hitting 3 and 4 stores in search of the best plant based burger on the market.

We were told this past weekend the reason for the Beyond Burger Shortage. Popularity of this delicious treat has reached a point were the company is having difficulties keeping up with the demand. Though it absolutely sucks to go through the headache of searching for my favorite burger with sometimes an empty return, it’s great to see that people are enjoying these plant based treats. It’s not a victory for vegans alone. It sends a statement to these food corporations that more people in this nation are becoming health conscious and if they want to stay in business then they must give the people healthier options. The days of GMO Frankenfoods are being hit with health consciousness.

I did a post several weeks ago giving a review for Beyond Burgers. Some people describe them as being a good alternative for when you’re trying to give up meat. I see them as an excellent combination of great taste, ingredients, and innovation. I’ve heard the Impossible burger is good, but it has yet to reach my area. But as long as I have the Beyond Burger it’s all good. I just hope that the company is able to get caught up on the demand.

71FzM1sqd4L._SL1050_Now, I gave these burgers a try because I couldn’t find any Beyond Burgers. They are called the Amy’s California Veggie Burger. Out of respect for my mother-in-law whom reads my blog I’m going to hold back my profanity to discuss how disgusting this garbage is.

I don’t know if anyone out there knows Amy but can you please tell her to sit down. She doesn’t know what in the hell she is doing with these burgers. First, Alex Ovechkin could take this thing out of the box and slap it around with his hockey stick. Imagine several layers of cardboard being glued together and frozen. Inside of this frozen cardboard are vegetable flavored hamster pellets that lacks flavor. Amy sucks at making burgers. I see why there is never a shortage on that garbage. People would never eat plant based if all of our food tasted like that rubbish.

If you are bold and brave enough to try those California burgers then God bless you. If anyone from California reads this I hope you know that this burger is giving you a bad reputation in these food streets. You need to tell Amy to stop making those hockey pucks and calling them burgers. I’ve had rice cakes that had more flavor than those wack ass burgers. I’m pretty sure someone out there really enjoys them and thinks they are great. You need prayer and your head examined.

Okay, I’m done banging on Amy’s wack burger. My reason for this post is to let anyone know the deal about the Beyond Burger shortage if you’ve had a difficult time finding them. So keep loving those Beyond Burgers and throw those Amy’s California Burgers in the garbage.


Deadly Ingredients In Processed Foods

As we continue this dialogue on junk and processed food, it’s extremely important to know what’s in the food that we are eating. A good friend of mine that’s a personal trainer tells his clients that they should not eat anything that has ingredients they can’t pronounce. If you stay on the perimeter of the grocery store then you have majority whole foods. The deeper you get inside the store,  the more garbage is put into your food. Pick up a box of swiss cake rolls and read the labels. You can’t pronounce all of that crap even if you tried.

The stuff that’s allowed to be put in the food is criminal and heinous. Animal bone char is used in sugar. Industrial plastics chemicals, “meat glue enzyme”, bleaching agents, styrofoam agents, and coal tar are just a few of the dangerous chemicals placed in our food supply. I’m going to list the top 50 chemicals in our food given to us by the Public Health Analysis of the Master’s in Public Health Program. This list contains the name, how it’s used, and the health risk associated with it. Just look at the list. Over 90% of these ingredients are somehow linked to cancer. We wonder why so many people young and old are being diagnosed with cancer. Just look at the food and it begins to become a little more clear.

  1. Sodium nitrate: Added to processed meats to stop bacterial growth. Linked to cancer in humans. (Worst Offender)
  2. Sulfites: Used to keep prepared foods fresh. Can cause breathing difficulties in those sensitive to the ingredient.
  3. Azodicarbonamide: Used in bagels and buns. Can cause asthma.
  4. Potassium bromate: Added to breads to increase volume. Linked to cancer in humans.
  5. Propyl gallate: Added to fat-containing products. Linked to cancer in humans
  6. BHA/BHT: A fat preservative, used in foods to extend shelf life. Linked to cancerous tumor growth.
  7. Propylene glycol: Better known as antifreeze. Thickens dairy products and salad dressing. Deemed ‘generally’ safe by FDA.
  8. Butane: Put in chicken nuggets to keep them tasting fresh. A known carcinogen.
  9. Monosodium glutamate (MSG): Flavor enhancer that can cause headaches. Linked in animal studies to nerve damage, heart problems and seizures.
  10. Disodium inosinate: In snack foods. Contains MSG.
  11. Disodium guanylate: Also used in snack foods, and contains MSG.
  12. Enriched flour: Used in many snack foods. A refined starch that is made from toxic ingredients.
  13. Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH): Geneticially-engineered version of natural growth hormone in cows. Boosts milk production in cows. Contains high levels of IGF-1, which is thought cause various types of cancer.
  14. Refined vegetable oil: Includes soybean oil, corn oil, safflower oil, canola oil, and peanut oil. High in omega-6 fats, which are thought to cause heart disease and cancer.
  15. Sodium benzoate: Used as a preservative in salad dressing and carbonated beverages. A known carcinogen and may cause damage our DNA.
  16. Brominated vegetable oil: Keeps flavor oils in soft drinks suspended. Bromate is a poison and can cause organ damage and birth defects. Not required to be listed on food labels.
  17. Propyl gallate: Found in meats, popcorn, soup mixes and frozen dinners. Shown to cause cancer in rats. Banned in some countries. Deemed safe by FDA.
  18. Olestra: Fat-like substance that is unabsorbed by the body. Used in place of natural fats in some snack foods. Can cause digestive problems, and also not healthy for the heart.
  19. Carrageenan: Stabilizer and thickening agent used in many prepared foods. Can cause ulcers and cancer.
  20. Polysorbate 60: A thickener that is used in baked goods. Can cause cancer in laboratory animals.
  21. Camauba wax: Used in chewing gums and to glaze certain foods. Can cause cancer and tumors.
  22. Magnesium sulphate: Used in tofu, and can cause cancer in laboratory animals.
  23. Chlorine dioxide: Used in bleaching flour. Can cause tumors and hyperactivity in children.
  24. Paraben: Used to stop mold and yeast forming in foods. Can disrupt hormones in the body, and could be linked to breast cancer.
  25. Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose: Used as a thickener in salad dressings. Could cause cancer in high quantities.
  26. Aluminum: A preservative in some packaged foods that can cause cancer.

Artificial Sweeteners to Avoid

Artificial sweeteners are regulated by FDA, just as food additives are, but this does not apply to products generally recognized as safe.

  1. Saccharin: Carcinogen found to cause bladder cancer in rats. (Worst Offender)
  2. Aspartame: An excitotoxin and thought to be a carcinogen. Can cause dizziness, headaches, blurred vision and stomach problems.
  3. High fructose corn syrup: Sweetener made from corn starch. Made from genetically-modified corn. Causes obesity, diabetes, heart problems, arthritis and insulin resistance.
  4. Acesulfame potassium: Used with other artificial sweeteners in diet sodas and ice cream. Linked to lung and breast tumors in rats.
  5. Sucralose: Splenda. Can cause swelling of liver and kidneys and a shrinkage of the thymus gland.
  6. Agave nectar: Sweetener derived from a cactus. Contains high levels of fructose, which causes insulin resistance, liver disease and inflammation of body tissues.
  7. Bleached starch: Can be used in many dairy products. Thought to be related to asthma and skin irritations.
  8. Tert butylhydroquinone: Used to preserve fish products. Could cause stomach tumors at high doses.

Artificial Food Colorings to Avoid

Food colorings are used to give foods a more attractive appearance, but some experts believe they cause serious health problems, including asthma and hyperactivity in children.

  1. Red #40: Found in many foods to alter color. All modern food dyes are derived from petroleum. A carcinogen that is linked to cancer in some studies. Also can cause hyperactivity in children. Banned in some European countries. (Worst Offender)
  2. Blue #1: Used in bakery products, candy and soft drinks. Can damage chromosomes and lead to cancer.
  3. Blue #2: Used in candy and pet food beverages. Can cause brain tumors
  4. Citrus red #1: Sprayed on oranges to make them look ripe. Can damage chromosomes and lead to cancer.
  5. Citrus red #2: Used to color oranges. Can cause cancer if you eat the peel.
  6. Green #3: Used in candy and beverages. May cause bladder tumors.
  7. Yellow #5:  Used in desserts, candy and baked goods.Thought to cause kidney tumors, according to some studies.
  8. Yellow #6: A carcinogen used in sausage, beverages and baked goods. Thought to cause kidney tumors, according to some studies.
  9. Red #2: A food coloring that may cause both asthma and cancer.
  10. Red #3: A carcinogen. that is added to cherry pie filling, ice cream and baked goods. May cause nerve damage and thyroid cancer.
  11. Caramel coloring: In soft drinks, sauces, pastries and breads. When made with ammonia, it can cause cancer in mice. Food companies not required to disclose if this ingredient is made with ammonia.
  12. Brown HT: Used in many packaged foods. Can cause hyperactivity in children, asthma and cancer.
  13. Orange B: A food dye that is used in hot dog and sausage casings.  High doses are bad for the liver and bile duct.
  14. Bixin: Food coloring that can cause hyperactivity in children and asthma.
  15. Norbixin:  Food coloring that can cause hyperactivity in children and asthma.
  16. Annatto: Food coloring that can cause hyperactivity in children and asthma

Why Is Fast And Junk Food So Addictive?

Continuing with the conversation on fast food and now junk food, I want to explore why this crap is so addictive. You literally can’t eat just one Lay’s potato chips. There was a time that I couldn’t put down a pack of Oreos until it was gone. If you grab a Triple Whopper, regardless of how full you feel, you finish eating that Triple Whopper and the fries. What’s wrong with this apparent addiction?

Fast food is highly processed, contains an enormous amount of calories, saturated fat, added sugar, carbohydrates, and have little to no nutritional value. A Gallup poll in 2013 surveyed 2,027 adults on fast food consumption. Out of the adults surveyed, 76% acknowledged that fast food is “not to good for you” or ” not good for you at all”. However, out of the 76% that acknowledged that fast food was unhealthy, 50% of them ate fast food once or more a week.

With so many people realizing the negative impact fast food has on our health, why are we consuming so much? I realize the fact that it’s quick and convenient, but there seems to be more to it. There seems to be a physical and a possible chemical dynamic related to this apparent fast food addiction. The fact that people make a mad dash to McDeath to purchase a McRib sandwich that’s made of pork stomach, heart, RECTUM, and a bleaching agent that is often used in the production of foamed plastics should alarm us that something is up.

It seems that there are several culprits but I will focus on three. The first is bad bacteria, parasites, and candida living in your gut. When we eat these factory made and refined foods, much of it is left behind in our colon due to its digestion difficulty. With this process and lifeless nature of the food, an overgrowth of fungus, bad bacteria, and parasites develop in your gut. These little microscopic pests thrive off of starchy, sugary, and fatty foods. They will cause intense cravings for the junk that’s sold to you in the fast food restaurants. What’s even funnier is that the cravings become even more intense when you try to give these foods up. The parasites are like drug addicts that desperately need a fix.

Probably the largest culprit is the marketing and science behind making these food addictions. This goes back to a series of posts that I made last month that discussed deadly food addictions. I first want to break down the science of addiction and then how it relates to the marketing.

Food corporations such as Nabisco, Mars, Conagra, and Kraft have teams of chemists, physicists, and biologists that specialize in the manipulation of food taste and textures. These food scientists have perfected chemically replicating the smell and taste of flavors such as barbecue, strawberry, watermelon, cherry, and many others. They study and analyze how different combinations of seasonings, spices, sweetness, fat and calorie content, textures on the tongue, smell, and appearance triggers dopamine release in the brain.

Dopamine is a chemical released in the brain by neurons when the brain achieves an euphoric feeling caused by an outside stimulant. With this dopamine is a process called the reward-motivated behavior. The greater the anticipation is for the reward, the greater the release of dopamine shall be. This dopamine release is the same component associated with addictions.

This is where the marketing team for these companies step in. Notice, primarily all food commercials play off your emotions or mental state. If you’re depressed, eat something. If you’re mad, eat something. If you’re happy, eat something. If you’re mentally tired, eat something. For every emotion you are urged to eat something for it. However, notice they never urge you to eat fresh blueberries to help improve brain function. No, no, no my friend. Ladies if you are depressed like in the movies then gorge yourself on vanilla ice cream that’s loaded with fat, sugar, and artificial vanilla that’s literally made from the secretions from a beaver’s butt. That’s a combination that food scientist realize triggers a dopamine release.

Not feeling like yourself, don’t bother with kale. Get yourself a Snickers bar and the world is great again. Having a baby shower? Let’s include chip and dip using Lay’s potato chips because you certainly can’t eat just one with the addictive combination of the crunch, fat, sodium and other spices.

This is a game that these people are playing with your life. They’re using your emotions and feelings to feed you garbage. Pay close attention to the commercials, movies, and television shows. Look at the food ads during sporting events. They are all plucking at your heart strings with a bunch of garbage food.

They are so low that they will specifically target your children with these marketing campaigns knowing that most parents will break if their children beg long and hard for something. Notice how you can eat one mango and feel satisfied. On the other hand you could eat Krispy Kreme doughnuts until you’re sick and still want more. We are a society of junk food addicts thanks to these corporations.


What The Fast Food Industry Is Doing To The Public

 

The fast food industry was one of the hot topics on the first day of the Healthy Gut Expert Summit. Mc Death, Murder King, Pizza Slut, Taco Hell, and Drunkin Donuts are just a few of the fast food establishments that are serving up death and disease Hot-N-Ready in a drive thru window near you. Now there is nothing wrong with grabbing a salad from one of these spots, but it’s mind boggling what these pieces of human excrement are allowed to feed you, and most importantly your children.  body-fast-food

This is a diagram that illustrates 13 of the illnesses associated with the over consumption of fast food and cancer should also be listed. Each of these health ailments are the precursor for short and long term damage to our body.

Short Term Health Damage

Before we get into those long term health situations of eating fast food, I feel that it’s very important to set the stage with the short term damage. Dietitian Christy Brissette discussed some of the short term ills caused by fast food. She also discussed the fact that it does not take long for the symptoms to begin to manifest themselves. She wrote that it only takes ONE fast food meal to do the following:

  • Narrow the arteries and cause increase of blood pressure
  • A blood sugar spike from the carbohydrates and added sugars. This will lead to an insulin surge that will rapidly drop the blood sugar levels. This leaves one feeling tired, cranky, and hungry for more.
  • Increase of inflammation throughout the body. Most Chron’s sufferers know at this point they should drop fast food. Also, an Australian study suggests that in people with asthma, a fast food meal that’s high in saturated fat can instantly increase inflammation in the airway, making the potential of an asthma attack all the more likely.
  • A study of 12 healthy young men that ate fast food for five days had a reduced ability of their muscles turning glucose into energy even though they didn’t eat more calories as part of the study.
  • Constipation due to a lack of fiber in the food
  • Heartburn and indigestion
  • Poor sleep

Long Term Health Damage

These short term term health effects eventually lead to long term damage. The high blood pressure developed in the short term has these potential long term effects:

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Dementia
  • Aneurysm
  • Heart failure
  • Weakend and narrowed blood vessels in the kidneys
  • Thickened, narrowed, or torn blood vessels in the eyes
  • Trouble with memory or understanding
  • Metabolic Syndrome

The long term effects of cholesterol are

  • Stomach pain from fatty deposits
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Atherosclerosis- A disease in which plaque builds up inside your arteries.

Long term issues with blood sugar levels are also associated with the constant consumption of fast food. The obesity and constant blood sugar spikes is a gateway to type 2 diabetes.

With the global spread of fast food chains, obesity has become a public health issue worldwide. As of July 1st, 2017, America ranked #1 as the world’s most obese nation beating China by almost 13 million people. There are several health issues that have the potential of being increased by obesity such as:

  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Some cancers
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Gout
  •  Osteoarthritis
  • Heart disease
  • Gallbladder disease and gallstones
  • Breathing problems such as sleep apnea and asthma

Fast food can also impact your mental health. According to the journal Nutritional Neuroscience, young adults 30 and under have an increased risk of suffering from mental distress with fast food consumption. The chronic inflammatory response that we discussed earlier is linked to depression and anxiety.

Now of course I couldn’t leave out our good friend cancer. We all know that cancer is linked to constant fast food consumption. However, I was surprised at a study in the UK that suggest people whom consume burgers, pizza, or chicken nuggets weekly have a 10% increased risk of developing cancer regardless of if you’re overweight or not. In fact, other studies suggest that healthy women have a 27% increased chance of developing breast cancer with the constant consumption of fast food. Men ages 35-74 have a 37% increased risk of developing prostate cancer.

Another issue with fast food is their use of vegetable oil. Scientist found that heating up vegetable oil releases toxic chemicals called aldehydes which have been linked to cancer, heart disease, and dementia. Martin Grootveld, a professor of bioanalytical chemistry and chemical pathology, said that his research showed “a typical meal of fish and chips”, fried in vegetable oil, contained as much as 100 to 200 times more toxic aldehydes than the safe daily limit set by the World Health Organization.

Also, the constant use and re-use of these oils throughout the day, and the elevated temperatures increase the free radicals carcinogens in the oil. This further elevates the exposure to cancer causing chemicals.

We literally could spend all day discussing the dangers of fast food consumption. A dietitian said that she gives clients the 80:20 rule. If they are eating an 80% healthy diet then they are allowed to eat 20% unhealthy. I understand and get that you might want a cheat day and grab a double burger. I used to eat double burgers with fries. Here’s the deal with the 80:20 rule, it only applies if you’re eating healthy 80% of the time. It doesn’t mean that you can cook fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, and broccoli loaded with cheese on Monday, and then grab a double burger on Friday as a cheat meal because Monday wasn’t technically “fast food”. I have several post coming up on fast food because I think it’s needed. Next I will go into these wicked food scientists that make your junk food so addictive.

 


A Crisis Looming Ahead?

For some people the talk of health might be mundane and boring. For some, it is probably the last thing that you want to hear or discuss. The conversation of your favorite reality star is more appealing. Another popular subject right now is “The Flat Earth Theory”. Maybe you’re interested in Hollywood and all of those satanic sexual deviants. Maybe you’re discussing the latest sporting event. Everything is a great conversation except for taking better care of yourself.  This attitude is exactly what these pharmaceutical companies and the medical industry are banking on.

This week is the Healthy Gut Experts Summit. Ironically there is also a Digestive Health Summit being held this weekend in Maryland/DC by Gastrointestinal specialist from across the nation. We have two dynamics at play here. We have the alternative medical world that are trying to naturally prevent and reverse something that is occuring. Then we have the modern medical world that are banking on the fact that people won’t make the necessary changes to prevent something.

So what is the “something” that they both are discussing? Though the CDC are not giving the exact numbers, there is an anticipation of an epidemic of high blood pressure, stroke, diabtetes, cancer and many other diseases. There is a health epidemic looming and the medical industry is banking that most people are not going to make the necessary dietary changes to prevent or reverse this.

Notice that both groups are focusing on the gut. I have spoke in ad nauseam in ten or more post about gut health and the significance of the gut microbiome. Regardless of if your doctor tells you this or not, the source of the majority of your diseases is the immune response that triggers chronic inflammation. The source of the immune response is your gut! Regardless of if it’s heart disease, Chron’s, eczema, or diabetes it has the same initial root cause. How many times must we bang on this topic of gut health! This is for real people regardless of if you believe it or not. I hope you do the research but until then, listen to me now and believe me later on.

We can’t continue to act as if nothing is going on. Let’s keep it 100% and realize that denial is death. You pretending that you don’t have one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel is not going to save you. Waiting until you’re on your death bed to go to the alter expecting for The Most High to save you is not the way to do it. If The Most High gave intervention every time we called upon him during an emergency that would eliminate the “miracle”. Its only a miracle because it’s a rare occurrence so we should not gamble with our lives. The words might seem harsh but these are harsh times. I hear people at work discuss conspiracy theories and the government turning old Wal Mart buildings into FEMA camps. These are fun to entertain but there is one question. Why would the government spend huge sums of money to round people up in FEMA camps when we are doing a good enough job of killing ourselves with the way that we eat.

The topic of health might be boring to some but as long as a potential threat looms of increased diseases then it’s much needed. I feel like it’s time to really go in on this health thing even more. If you still screw up then you can’t say that the information wasn’t out there. I looked at some of the coverage from the Gut Health Experts Summit on Monday and some tremendous information was being discussed. Using A Plant Based Diet For Mental Health

This is a very touchy subject that must be dealt with in a delicate manner. Mental health is real and is often downplayed. Not sure if its the stigma attached to it, but it’s often overlooked when we discuss health. To have dis-ease of the mind is to also have dis-ease of the body and soul. When I was going to school for Social Work I completed an internship at a crisis intervention center. Though we did work with civilian clients, I would dare to say that 65% of our clients were veterans and ex-service members.

This is jumping off subject but so many people were trying to flip the narrative of the NFL protest and say the players are disrespecting the military servicemen. You know very well it was about unarmed black men being shot by police. The people that make these claims are so fake and phony and prove that patriotism is indeed the last act of the scoundrel. I worked with the vets so I know what I’m talking about. If people truly cared about veterans like they claim then we wouldn’t have countless veterans homeless and sleeping under bridges every night. If you really cared about  veterans they would not have to push there way into soup kitchens everyday. If you cared about veterans, then you patriots would be advocating to the government to provide greater access to benefits for veterans and expedient and thorough health care from the VA Hospital. You would be offering your free time and resources to these organizations that often struggle financially to provide the resources they offer to help the veterans. This of course is not everyone but the vast majority of you fake patriots are using patriotism as a buffer for your hatred of black people.

Now back to the point. While in school and working at the crisis center I noticed a common theme between the treatment given to those with personality disorders, mood disorders, trauma and stress related disorders, and opiate addiction. There was a lack of focus on getting to the source of the problem and an increase of prescribing pharmaceutical drugs. Psychotropic drugs, methadone, and suboxone became the number one solution. This is the result of numerous things but constant budget cuts from the federal government for mental health plays a huge roll.

I would have discussions with veterans that spoke of the intervention given by Veteran’s Affairs for mental health. The definition of intervention for the VA Hospital was to use the stroke of a pen to prescribe psychotropic drugs and have the vets walk around like zombies. I could not understand the rationale of turning human beings into a killing machine, sending them into bloody conflicts that probably looked like hell on Earth, debrief them for a week or two, and then expect them to just be normal again. That’s very idiotic in my opinion.

I also wrestled with the ethical and moral dilemma of prescribing methadone and suboxone to those with an opioid addiction. Most of the individuals were not even going through any form of therapeutic measures outside of the pharmaceuticals. They go to the suboxone clinic and get their prescription filled along with other crap like diet pills and B12 shots. You are essentially eliminating one addiction for another without any treatments that get to the root cause.

I was nowhere near being health conscious at this time but I was always interested in holistic medicine for mental health. I understand that sometimes psychotropic drugs and traditional treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy are useful. However, I do lean more towards the holistic approach to mental health. Treatments such as accupuncture, yoga, magnesium supplements, biofeedback, kava, reflexology, homeopathy, ayurveda, meditation, and prayer are under the holistic umbrella.

I also realize that you can’t eat everything away but there is research that suggest eating more plants helps with mental health which falls under the holistic umbrella. According to Dr. Edward Group of the Global Healing Center, says that the Standard American Diet (SAD) lacks many of the essential nutrients to support optimal mental health. Dr. Edward Group provides a list of nutrients needed for brain health:

  • Amino Acids
  • Vitamin B1 (Thiamine)
  • Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)
  • Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin)
  • Folate
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D
  • Sodium and Potassium
  • Omega 3
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Calcium
  • Zinc

Fortunately we can get these nutrients from eating more of a plant based diet. These are some of the plants that include these nutrients.

I know that its not the end all be all, but I do find it amazing that an imbalanced diet plays a role in mental health. If you eat good then you feel good. The mind and body must be at a state of nutritional homeostasis for it to reach a point that it can heal itself. Hopefully this is something that mental practitioners will explore.
